SEA - PDX is the 8th most popular domestic route from SEA, and SEA - YVR is the 1st most popular international route. I think HSR alignments that connect the four major regional airports (Seattle, Portland, Vancouver, Spokane) are paramount to avoiding air travel expansion in the region. The suburban sprawl of the greater Seattle region is immense, and making this map somewhat saddened me that so much valuable environment is being consumed by low density, unsustainable sprawl. I envision quad tracking, with HSR / Regional rail operating in-between or underneath a locally serving Link line (think U-Bahn vs R-Bahn / ICE).Įverywhere needs upzones. The right of way is large and straight, and the adjoining land is flat. Empire Builder travels between Chicago Minneapolis/St. Amtrak Cascades travels between Vancouver, BC Seattle Tacoma Portland Salem and Eugene. Highway 99 continues to be a massive infrastructure and transit opportunity. Amtrak has three routes: Coast Starlight travels between Seattle, Portland, and Los Angeles. Generally the more curved out the line, the more I think it's a pretty good alignment. Some alignments are pretty close to what I think a reasonable route would be, but others are less sure. I did not put much time into system operation planning. There are a total of eleven stops between downtown Seattle and the airport. We really need something like this map formalized.ĭowntown Seattle is a rat's nest in this plan and shared segments are not final. Light rail station at Sea-Tac Light rail also serves the SoDo District including Lumen Field and T-Mobile Park, Beacon Hill, Mount Baker, Columbia City, the Rainier Valley, Rainier Beach, Tukwila, and then Sea-Tac Airport. A plan like this one of "shovel-ready" projects is also extremely attractive to the federal government for writing grants. If the city of Seattle maintained a master transit plan, these 7 years of back and forth between agencies, groups, orgs could have been done and we could have started construction within a year.
It has been 7 (SEVEN!!) years since ST3 passed and we still do not have construction started on a vast majority of the projects. Maps for the cities of SeaTac, Tukwila and Des Moines are also available.

Some of the longest delays in building infrastructure are due to jurisdictions not having a plan before Sound Transit wins a vote. Find free Seattle area and Washington state maps online. I've combined several ideas I've seen, notably Seattle Subway's Link, Stephen Fesler's Sounder, and Cascadia Rail's HSR maps with a couple (sometimes reasonable, sometimes moonshot) ideas of my own. There is no shortage of groups advocating for better transit and cycling infrastructure. I'm proud of Seattle for having such a burgeoning and enthusiastic group of people questioning the car dependent nature of our transportation infrastructure. There's a lot on the map, so use the layers on the left to sort out different modes!
